So you have built a website. Now what? You might just be sitting and twiddling your thumbs trying to figure out what the next step is.

Your website may look lovely, but if it sits online with no visitors, it’s not really helping to grow your business. Along with organic, referral and paid traffic you obviously want to drive some traffic to your site. But how can you do that?

Social media marketing is a great way to get customer engagement and to drive people to your site. Here are five steps you should follow if you want to get the most out of your social media strategy to help grow site traffic and build and engage followers.

  1. Make sure your website is listed on all of your social media networks.

Make sure that each of your social media pages has a link through to your website. It may seem simple, but it can easily be forgotten in the rush to get everything set up and working. Don’t forget this on all of your social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+. If you’re trying out Instagram and Tumblr too, each link will generate traffic as people click through from your content.

  1. Keep an eye on your social media accounts.

Once you’ve made sure your site address is included on your networks, you need to make sure that you are monitoring these networks for engagements. Are you getting likes, retweets, and clicks? Are people engaging with you? Do people use these networks to reach out and connect with you? Keep an eye on all of these, perhaps using a tool such as Hootsuite to have a single screen view to help you keep up to date with any interactions.

  1. Create a blog – and use it regularly!

New content is a key driver when it comes to getting more traffic on your site – which is why creating a blog is the perfect way to ensure that you are getting new site traffic. Having dynamic and up to date content isn’t just good for people – Google also ranks your site based in how much content is uploaded regularly.

Blogs aren’t just about the written word either – videos, images and polls can also help to engage customers. Share any new content across the channels to get the most out of each new piece of work.

  1. Use social media advertising to boost your followers.

Promoted tweets or Facebook ads will put your content in front of even more people. Create dedicated landing pages to really drive home any key messaging and make sure that you are picking up any leads that may come through with a lead generation form.

  1. Twitter Chats and Google Hangouts – pro-level social media marketing.

Hosting a chat through hashtags on Twitter or with a Google hangout can help to really make customers feel like an important part of your business, with you helping share the latest insights or market trends. You can use these online events to promote relevant content by linking to your site.
