Signs that you are headed for financial ruin are as obvious as signs on the highway, but many people get distracted when it comes to paying attention to them.

When I was in my early 20s, I made an impulsive cross-country move that left me without a steady income for about six months. I tried to ignore the signs that we were headed for financial ruin, but eventually the bills became impossible to ignore.

I have friends who have declared bankruptcy and others who have simply walked away from their bills until the debt disappeared from their credit records. It’s possible to go from being thousands of dollars in debt to having wealth, but it takes daily discipline and willingness to take financial responsibility. Here are some of the telltale signs that you are headed down the road of financial ruin, as well as some ways to make a major U-turn and prevent bankruptcy:

Buying groceries on credit

If you don’t have enough money in your checking account to purchase food and have to use credit, then you are in financial trouble. If you just use a credit card because it’s convenient, and then pay it off, that’s a different situation. I knew I had trouble when I used credit cards for pizza delivery instead of being able to pull out a . To avoid bankruptcy, start working on a cash-only basis for a while. Make a special envelope for food money. Clip coupons as well, or share extreme couponing tips with friends.

Making less income than housing expenses

If you don’t have enough income coming in to pay your rent or mortgage and utilities, consider that a sign of financial desperation. Find other ways to make extra income. Mow lawns for neighbors if you have to. Consider renting a less expensive apartment. If you own a home, refinance or opt for a short sale so that you can downsize to a more affordable living situation. Otherwise, you will face foreclosure.

Not being able to pay credit card minimum

When your minimum payment becomes so high that you can’t afford to pay it, you need to consider your options. Credit cards are unsecured debt, which means some people have no problem walking away from the bills. It’s better to take responsibility and pay off your credit cards with the debt snowball plan. To avoid bankruptcy, you need to find a way to pay the minimum payments, or call the credit card companies to work out a temporary solution.

Being overdrawn on your checking account

Some banks will allow you to be overdrawn on your checking account up to a certain amount. But being overdrawn is always a red flag that you are not living within your means. Make a commitment to have at least 0 in your checking account as a cushion. Start making sacrifices each day to save money. It’s fine to think about your monthly bills and budget, but I had to start looking at my finances daily to really reach my final, debt-free destination.

To avoid bankruptcy and prevent foreclosure on your home, make financial sacrifices early and often. Don’t wait until you see the signs of financial desperation. I have a friend who is renting out a room to ease her financial burdens. A relative is renting out his Florida winter home. There’s no shame in becoming a multigenerational household to save money on living expenses. It’s easier to navigate around financial potholes than to get out once you’re stuck.

Why boring and banal aren’t always bad things

When it comes to American culture, the phrase “bigger is better” gets thrown around a lot – big cars, big houses and, in some parts of the South, big hats too. But to me, that phrase has figurative meaning too, because I think it applies to the approaches people take for advertising their causes.

I’ll use the example of “The Most Interesting Man In The World.” It’s an obvious exaggeration, (and everyone knows it), but it’s a successful ad anyway. After all, the ad by a company that features logic and discourse is going to stick in a lot less minds than the ad saying that the man who “can speak French, in Russian” likes to drink Dos XX.

It isn’t just beer companies either. AT&T says they have the fastest 4G network; Verizon, the largest. Apple just started running ads featuring Bryan Cranston, also known as Walter White, narrating and listing all the supposed accolades of the iPad, and anyone who has seen a commercial for “how it feels to chew 5Gum” knows how sensationalist they can be.

On a more local scale, I think of the group who has come to campus and set up graphic images of stillbirths and the like on and around Landis Green. Whether or not their core message is as over-the-top as their advertising is beyond me, but I think most students who see those images are taken aback to varying degrees.

Thanks to the Internet, it is also easier than ever to get exposed to the drama that is the average advertisement. It’s the case when YouTube starts most of their videos with an ad featuring loud music, and the case when Seminole Boosters keeps sending me emails explaining their latest dire need for my money.

And really, what all those paragraphs of examples of sensationalism are is a lead up to my point, which is that the valid, credible data gets no love from the public. Calm, normal sized font on a flyer doesn’t get the attention that a few exclamation marks does, and the people standing near the Student Union quoting the Bible rarely are discussing the parts that follow simple logic.

I see this as sad because I honestly think there is a market for logic, both in the United States and at Florida State. There might be a higher reaction threshold for the preacher speaking in a normal voice and a calm manner, but I know I’d certainly be more likely to sit down and give him or her some of my time in that case.

I’m arguing that we should all put in more effort and attention than we are now, which is a fight I don’t pretend to think I can win every time. But history is a good teacher, and I think history shows there is a place for rational discourse on most topics. If there wasn’t a place like that, or an audience for logic, I’d get fired for writing articles that no one reads. Thankfully, there are people out there willing to look for more than BuzzFeed’s latest empty headline about how to change your life.

It may be impossible for any of us to always have eyes only for the logic in the world, and that’s okay. Life would be pretty boring if I didn’t let myself come home and say that the Guthrie’s sauce I just ate with some chicken was “the best sauce ever,” or the like. So sensationalism is still my friend, under the right circumstances.

What those “right circumstances” will continue to be difficult to say, which means my point here is not to ask for perfeaction, but simply a mild increase in appreciation for rationality. I guess in the end I’ll always be a fan of the actions, more so than the words. It may be hyperbole to say so, but I am, and always will be, a logic man.
