How to Post on Reddit
Understanding how to post a thread on Reddit can be difficult if you’re not used to it. Reddit operates a rather archaic platform, and little has changed in the last 15 years.
Let’s explore how to create a post on Reddit from both your computer and your smartphone.
How to Post on Reddit via a Computer
Assuming you have already found your favorite sub-Reddit and you know what you want to post, here’s how to make a post on Reddit from your computer.
1. Decide on Your Post
Just click on the ‘Create Post’ button from within your chosen sub. You’ll now have three options for post types.
- Text post
- Image/video post
- Link
2. Create Your Post
A basic text post will always require a title and some text within the body. Reddit also has a text editor for formatting purposes. Alternatively, you can use the markdown option for formatting.
Media posts require a title and then a video or a photo. This can be uploaded directly from your computer. If the image or video is aimed at adults, mark it with the “NSFW” flare.
Finally, you can put in a Reddit post link. This is simply a link and only requires the title and the link.
3. Send Your Post into the World
After you’ve figured out how to post links on Reddit and you’ve crafted the perfect post, click on the ‘Post’ button, and your post will be ready to go.
Take note, with some sub-Reddits; your post may require moderator approval before it goes public. Different sub-Reddits will have varying policies and timescales for approval of new posts.
How to Post on Reddit via a Mobile Device
Despite Reddit’s adherence to the old-school chatroom format, they have released an app in recent years for mobile users.
If you’re using the mobile browser, the process is the same as above, but it’s not always obvious how to post on Reddit if you’re using the app.
1. Navigate to Your New Post
Assuming you’ve already downloaded the app and you’re trying to find out how to link things on Reddit, open the app and sign in with your Reddit account login.
Find your desired sub by using the search bar and tap the pencil icon in the bottom center of the screen.
Take note: the layout is exactly the same whether you’re using Android or iOS.
2. Choose Your Post Type
Like on your computer, you’ll now need to tap the icon for the type of post you want to create. It can be a text post, image/video post, or a link on Reddit.
Create the title for your post, write, or attach any file you like. If you use the cloud, you may be able to access your computer files on your mobile device.
3. Send Out Your Content
Click the “Post” button, and your content will be either published or sent to the moderation team for approval.
Posts from computers and those from mobile devices are treated in the same manner and come with the same formatting.
