Today we have a guest post from Francesco Ricceri of Pixcone, a web application for building infographics and visual content.

Want to use infographics to establish direct communication with your audience? Keep in mind these tips. Infographics are one of the most effective ways to present and spread information. Images can reveal large amount of data all at once, making the process of learning concepts and ideas more fun and easy.

Visuals have been used by brands, authors, bloggers, governments, authorities, and healthcare associations to get in touch with their audience for a long time. That said, it’s a no-brainer that infographics can boost our communication provided that we keep a high level and quality of visuals.

If you are in the adventure of creating yourself an infographic, keep in mind these points:

  • Do research on the topic of your infographic.

Always look for a truthful story
- content is king. A well-designed infographic story has:

-a theme or question, a body, where more contextual information is shown
and a conclusion.

Always do a deep analysis and look for quality sources.

  • Keep your design simple.

Limit color scheme to 3-4. Use no more than a couple of fonts for text and place your content on a grid. Keep in account margins and spacing that give “breadth” to the composition and make things easy to read.

  • Use images over text.

Text is great for titles and general labeling, especially with a strong typography, but visuals are processed faster by our brains.

  • Use images not to add beauty, but information.

A principle from architecture states: form follows function. So always consider things for their inner function over how they look.

  • Consider where your audience will see your infographic.

Think about which device will be used by readers to see your infographic and always choose size and scale properly. Before publication, try the infographic on different devices and screen sizes.

  • Cite sources of your data.

To make your content trustable, remember to mention all the sources of information about the topic of the infographic.

  • For the Infographic creation itself use a dedicated tool
.

There are many web applications that allow users to create infographics. Often they offer templates that users can modify and change according to their needs. This is really important because it saves people with no graphics skills from having a bad time with the design process.
