Whether you’re a business owner or not is irrelevant — content is what you go on social media to see. When it comes to being a business on social media, the amount of effort you put into content creation is much greater. It comes down to shareability, style, timing and various other factors that, if approached without care, will kill your social media pages.

Tip No. 1 — Make it pop

According to Venture Beat, there were roughly one billion people were on Twitter in September 2013, about 250 million of who whom were active. Needless to say, that’s a lot of content being pumped out every day on just one platform.

If you’re going to create content that people will notice and ultimately react to in the form of retweets, shares, likes and comments, it will have to make an immediate impact. How? Use images, videos, infographics and statistics. You can also combine these elements to create content that is packed full of information. If not, everything you post will get caught up with trillions of other words and no one will notice. Your social media marketing efforts will go unnoticed.

Tip No. 2 — Be consistent

People want to know what they are going to get when they follow or like a social media page. While it is never a good idea to “sell sell sell,” it is an even worse idea to spend days trying to immediately increase profits followed by a small amount of time actually interacting with your customers and influencers in your industry. This will frustrate your followers and ultimately damage your reputation online, leading to a less loyal and perhaps smaller base of likes and follows.

Also remain consistent grammatically and graphically. This ties in directly with tip number one; create content that is pleasing to the eye. Your followers will thank you. Make sure to attack your social media marketing campaign with a detailed plan to ensure that your followers know what they will be viewing every time they log in.

Tip No. 3 — Don’t repeat often

It’s important to note that it is OK to repeat content. The problem with this, however, is that many people believe it is OK to post the same content multiple times a day.

Ask yourself: If you’re another person deciding whether or not to follow your account and you see that the same content is being posted continuously, are you going to follow? Probably not. If you are following an account that begins to lack in creativity and copy and pastes previous content, are you going to get frustrated and unfollow? Probably.

If you’re going to repeat content, then be sure to space it out a few days. Only certain businesses, such as those that offer promotions, can get away with posting the same content daily.

Tip No. 4 — Build off previous content

There is a common belief that the only form of content to build off of is content produced by others — whether they are a competitor, friend or top influencer in the industry, content produced by others is seen as a breeding ground for new ideas.

However, the best social media campaigns are those that use a mixture of secondary content and primary content to formulate new ideas. This often involves keeping close track of how your own posts perform. It’s generally a good idea to maintain multiple spreadsheets to store data or discover software that fits your needs — these can can be used in content creation going forward. Once you know how to combine secondary content and primary content, you can begin to understand a social media campaign.
