Google To Comply With The Digital Services Act

Google plans to share more insights into how targeted ads are served to users in the European Union (EU) and expand the ads transparency center — all based on its need to adhere to online content rules and regulations.

Under the regulations — the Digital Services Act (DSA), which roll out Friday — the responsibility now resides with large platforms that have more than 45 million regional users, such as Google.

Platforms that do not adhere to the rules could face significant financial penalties of up to 6% of their worldwide annual turnover.

Google said it will expand the Ads Transparency Center, a global searchable repository of advertisers across all its platforms, to meet specific DSA provisions and providing additional information on targeting for ads served in the European Union.

In the updated Transparency Center version, people will have access to information about Google policies for each product and will find reporting and appeals tools, discover Transparency Reports and learn more about its policy development process.

The move also expands on data access for researchers to advance public understanding of Google services. The project will increase data access for researchers looking to understand more about how Google Search, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Play and Shopping work in practice, and conducting research related to understanding systemic content risks in the EU.

Changes also are being made to increase the visibility into its content-moderation decisions and give users different ways to contact Google.

The reporting and the appeals processes are being updated to provide specified types of information and context about decisions.

The company says that whether looking at risks of illegal content dissemination or risks to fundamental rights, public health or civic discourse, Google is committed to assessing all risks related to its largest online platforms and search engine in line with DSA requirements.
