Today’s technology allows Millennials access to information at their fingertips, creating a culture of self-directed learning through user-generated content. In the workplace, management teams are working to incorporate agile and nimble learning management systems that leverage this new approach to learning and development.

Businesses must strive to create a self-sustaining culture of learning and development because fresh hires expect to know what they are doing and why they are doing it. To engage these employees, one must tap into the Millennial learning mindset and understand what drives them on a daily basis.

In order to better train, educate and develop your staff in a meaningful way, keep these three things in mind:

Getting in Tune

Transparency is necessary for Millennials to feel motivated at work. Today’s workers tend to respond well to the freedom of information and knowledge. Transparency paired with access creates the “always-on” learning process that they need to develop their skills and talents.

Clearly communicate the status, goals and vision of your organization to better engage your Millennial employees, and help them learn in a sustainable and impactful way.

Social Media Revolution

Millennials consider their job role, company’s positioning and corporate culture as a source of pride. By advocating for your business online, they will gain valuable experience in areas like customer service, sales and marketing.

Bringing your employees’ personal brands into your daily workflow can facilitate consistent and organic talent development, and personal brand building can then turn into performance gains.

Flat Structures

Millennials trust socially-proven information and group opinion rather than old-fashioned corporate hierarchies. This is where employee learning is headed as well.

Employee contributions to your learning curriculum (an employee-driven learning economy) leads to better adoption, faster development, greater colleague support and better team performance.

Ultimately, today, Millennials need managers to simply help them help each other.

Attracting talent, retaining high-performers and developing employees is one of the primary challenges that businesses face right now. Organizations that are always learning and developing will continue to thrive and keep up with the pace of business today, while their competitors who do not invest in talent development may struggle to innovate and compete.
