Starting a Blog – What You Need to Know

January 26, 2016

Are you starting a blog for your business in the New Year? There are some things you should know about the best ways to attract new business with your blog.

There are a lot of places you can go to answer your technical questions, but as you get started you will have to plan and produce the content that you will be creating.

Common Questions Asked When Starting a Blog:

Best platform?

WordPress is still your best bet. It can easily allow you to build the entire site, and quickly update content. WordPress SEO plugins such as Yoast make it easy to understand what type of content Google is looking for, and be able to adjust what you publish accordingly.

How often should I blog?

I hear this question a lot. Your content will need to maintain a certain quality level to stay professional. You won’t want to produce so much content that you spread yourself thin, and publish sloppy content.

That being said, your blog is your way to get in front of your audience. It’s your way to stay top of mind with potential customers. You should probably publish at least once a week in order to maintain a consistent presence with your audience.

What are keywords and how should I use them?

New readers have the ability to find your individual blog post or web page through Google. Say for example you wrote a post about effective 10-minute workouts. The obvious keyword is “effective 10-minute workouts.” If your blog post is optimized well for this phrase, people will be able to find your post when they search for it.

So in essence, a keyword is whatever a potential reader searches for. If your site is optimized for that keyword, it can potentially show up in the results. If you’re on WordPress, using Yoast can help you optimize your site. Otherwise talking with an experienced marketing writer can help.

What should I write about?

Anything and everything that your customer will find interesting. The one thing I will caution you against, is your customers do not want to read a commercial for your services. What they want, is the answer to their question. They want to be informed about your industry. They want your take on key industry news. They want general consumer advice in your industry.

If you are looking for ideas as you are starting a blog, try fitting your post into one of these categories.

How do I get started?

My advice for starting a blog would be to sit down and brainstorm 5-10 post ideas. This should take the writer’s block excuse out of the equation when it’s time to write. Then, find time to sit down and spend an hour writing here or there. You should be able to work your way down your idea list.

Wrapping it up…
